Drunk Driver - Drinking Game Rules & How to Play
Drunk Driver is a drinking game in the Card Games category for 3-8 players that takes about 15-25 min with a medium difficulty level.
Navigate card obstacles while drinking
Equipment Needed
- Standard deck of cards
- Drinks
Setup
Shuffle a standard deck of cards and place six cards face down in a straight line on the table. These six cards form the 'road' that players need to navigate. Keep the remaining deck nearby as it will be used to add new cards when face cards are flipped. Make sure everyone has their drinks ready within reach before starting the game.
How to Play Drunk Driver
- Lay 6 cards face down (the road)
- Flip cards left to right
- Number cards = safe, continue
- Face cards = drink and add more cards
- Jack = 1 card, Queen = 2, King = 3, Ace = 4
- Get across to win
- First across assigns 5 drinks
- Multiple rounds
Tips & Strategies
Watch for face cards, they're your biggest threat. Getting a King can really mess up your progress since you'll have to add three more cards to the road. If you're close to the finish line, take it slow and prepare for the possibility of an Ace. Remember to shuffle thoroughly after each round since clumps of face cards can make the road brutal. Finally, keep track of who still owes you drinks when you win, so you don't let them off the hook!
Variations
Instead of laying a straight road, set the six cards in a zigzag or random pattern across the table, and players must physically reach over and follow the direction of the road to flip each card.: Lay down 10 cards instead of six for a longer road, and face cards still add the same number of cards, making it much harder to finish in one round.: Split players into two teams. Each team takes turns flipping cards, and any face card means both team members have to drink and add the required extra cards.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What happens if I flip an Ace?
- An Ace means you add four more cards to your road and take a hefty drink. This can seriously set you back, especially near the end.
- Can more than one player win in a round?
- No. The first person to get across the road is the only winner and assigns five drinks to anyone they choose. Everyone else keeps playing until they cross or give up.
- What happens if there aren't enough cards left to add for a face card?
- Reshuffle the discard pile to form a new deck and continue adding cards until the road is complete.
- Can I just drink and not add cards when flipping a face card?
- No, the game mandates that you must both drink and add the corresponding number of cards to the road. No shortcuts allowed!
