Shot Chess is a drinking game in the Two Player category for 2 players that takes about 30-60 min with a hard difficulty level.
Chess with shot glass pieces
Equipment Needed
- Chess set
- Shot glasses
- Various drinks
Setup
Arrange a standard chessboard as you would for a regular game, but replace each piece with a shot glass. Pawns use smaller shot glasses, while larger glasses represent rooks, knights, bishops, queens, and kings. Fill each glass with a drink that corresponds to its importance, something mild for pawns, and progressively stronger for higher-ranking pieces. Keep the drink types consistent for clarity during gameplay.

- Captured piece = drink that shot
- Checkmate = loser drinks remaining
- Strategy plus drinking
- Gets harder as game progresses
- Classic combination
- For skilled players
Tips & Strategies
Keep an eye on your opponent's queen and bishops early on; losing these pieces means drinking larger and stronger shots, which can impair your strategic thinking fast. Consider filling pawns with a lighter drink, like beer or cider,to avoid burnout when a series of pawns gets captured. If you're aiming for a long game, pace your moves to avoid losing key pieces too quickly, especially ones with heavier shots. Don't underestimate how hard it gets to focus on chess strategy after a checkmate and the final shot blitz.
Variations
Color-Coded Shots: Assign drinks based on piece color: dark liquors for black pieces, light liquors for white pieces.. Double-Take Capture: Every time you capture a piece, you drink its shot and pour another to refill it, doubling the stakes for repeated captures.. Endgame Bomb: For every piece a player has left after checkmate, the winner assigns bonus shots proportional to the piece value, kings excluded.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What happens if a pawn is promoted?
- When a pawn is promoted, the player replaces the pawn's shot glass with the corresponding drink-filled glass for the chosen piece. Be ready to drink the original pawn shot first!
- Can you adjust drink types for weaker players?
- Yes, you can swap heavier drinks for lighter ones, use soda or water for pawns and milder liquors for higher-ranking pieces, without changing the flow of the game.
- Do you drink your own captured pieces?
- No, you drink the shot from the piece you captured from your opponent. This is what makes aggressive moves riskier in the long run!
- What if someone gets too drunk to continue?
- If a player can't finish, declare checkmate and have the remaining shots divided evenly among all players to end the game.
