Equipment Needed
Setup
Pick a central seat as the designated hot seat, and surround it with chairs or standing spots for the other players. Grab enough drinks for everyone to last the full 20-30 minutes. Determine the order each person will take the hot seat so you can rotate smoothly after every 2-minute round, use a coin flip or start clockwise if you can't decide.
How to Play Hot Seat Questions
- One person in hot seat
- Others rapid fire questions
- Must answer immediately
- Refuse = drink 2
- Hesitate = drink 1
- Obviously lying = drink 3
- 2 minutes per seat
- Rotate through everyone
Tips & Strategies
Keep questions sharp and simple. Long or overly convoluted questions waste time and give the person in the hot seat room to think, which defeats the purpose. If you're unsure about whether a hesitation counts, vote as a group. Always watch for obviously fake answers; calling someone's bluff is part of the fun. Don't forget, the hot seat timer stops at 2 minutes, so have someone on phone timer duty or you'll lose track.
Variations
Double Dare Round: Players can choose to ask a dare-based question instead of traditional hot seat ones; if the person refuses, they drink 4 instead of 2.. Truth Pool: Add a bowl where everyone writes one pre-determined question on a slip of paper. During each hot seat turn, the player must answer one random draw from the Truth Pool.. Reverse Heat: Instead of one hot seat player, the group answers one question posed by the hot seat player. Hesitations, refusals, or lies result in individual drinks.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What counts as hesitation?
- Any pause longer than 3 seconds after the question is finished counts as hesitation and costs you 1 drink. Use a phone timer if disputes come up.
- How do you handle someone lying?
- The group votes majority-rule on whether an answer is obviously fake. If the group agrees it's a lie, the hot seat player takes 3 drinks.
- Can you skip the timer?
- No, the 2-minute timer is essential to keep the game moving and give everyone equal turns in the hot seat. Assign a timekeeper before starting.
- What if someone doesn’t ask questions fast enough?
- The question asker must drink 1 for each delay over 3 seconds between questions. This keeps the pace energetic and fair for the hot seat player.
