Floating Pong - Drinking Game Rules & How to Play
Floating Pong is a drinking game in the Outdoor Games category for 4-8 players that takes about 15-30 min with a hard difficulty level.
Beer pong on pool floats
Equipment Needed
Setup
Place two pool floats in the middle of the pool, roughly 6 feet apart, and stabilize them as best as possible. Arrange 10 plastic cups in a triangle formation on each float, filling each cup with about 2 inches of beer or another drink. Have at least two ping pong balls ready and designate teams of 2-4 players each; determine who shoots first with a quick game of eye-to-eye or a coin flip on dry land.
How to Play Floating Pong
- Set up the game according to basic rules
- Players take turns or play simultaneously
- Penalties result in drinking
- Success means assigning drinks
- Continue until winner emerges
- Loser faces final penalty
- Winner earns bragging rights
- Adjust rules as needed for your group
Tips & Strategies
Keep your throws low and controlled to avoid the ping pong ball rolling off the float into the pool. If the floats start drifting apart, use a pool skimmer or a teammate in the water to nudge them closer without spilling the cups. Be prepared for splash-related distractions, especially if players are on pool jets or waves. Also, consider marking the cup positions lightly with a waterproof marker so they're easy to reset if a float tips slightly.
Variations
Tidal Wave Mode. Sink or Swim. Treading Challenge
Frequently Asked Questions
- How do you stabilize the pool floats during the game?
- You can tie the floats to stationary spots on the pool's edge using string, or place weight bags at their bases to help keep them steady.
- What happens if the ping pong ball lands in the pool?
- A member of the shooting team must retrieve it, but they must swim back to their side before their next shot.
- Can cups fall into the water, and what do you do if they do?
- Yes, cups can fall in. If a cup tips over, the opposing team gets to re-place it upright in the middle of the shooting float, but it must remain empty for the rest of the round.
- What if the floats drift too far apart during the game?
- Players may pause the game to reposition the floats using a pool skimmer or by swimming them back into place. Hold the floats steady until everyone agrees they're aligned again.
