Tips & Strategies
Keep track of the meld combinations for each round so you can plan your discards strategically. If you're one card away from melding, try to bait others into discarding what you need by holding onto high-value cards. Assigning drinks when you successfully go out is key, target players who seem the least affected so far to keep things competitive. Finally, avoid getting stuck with high-point cards like face cards in your hand when someone else goes out, they'll hit your score hard and force you to drink.
Variations
Shot-for-Shot Rummy: Instead of assigning sips when you go out, assign full shots to one or more players. Be careful, this gets intense fast.. Wildcard Mayhem: Add jokers to the deck as wild cards, but anyone who uses a joker in a meld has to take a drink.. Reverse Penalty: Instead of the loser of each hand drinking, the winner has to take a drink for every card left in the loser's hand.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What are the melds for each round in Liverpool Rummy?
- The meld combinations change each round, e.g., two sets of three in the first round, one set of three and one run of four in the second, etc. Agree on a full list before starting to avoid arguments mid-game.
- What happens if I accidentally discard a card I need?
- You'll have to wait until your next turn to pick it back up, and if someone else snags it first, you're out of luck (and likely taking a penalty drink).
- How does assigning drinks work when I go out?
- When you successfully go out, you get to assign the number of drinks equal to the number of cards in everyone else's hands. Split them up however you like, or target one player.
- What happens to leftover cards at the end of a round?
- Any unmelded cards left in your hand count as penalty points, with face cards worth 10, aces worth 15, and others worth their face value. You also drink for each point.
