ABC Categories is a drinking game in the No Equipment category for 3-15 players that takes about 15-25 min with a easy difficulty level.
Name items A-Z in a category
Equipment Needed
Setup
Grab your drinks and sit in a circle or arrange yourselves comfortably in a way where everyone can hear each other clearly. Pick someone to start the first round and agree on a category like 'fruits,' 'movie titles,' or 'sports teams.' Make sure everyone has their drink ready, you're about to need it.
How to Play ABC Categories
- Pick a category
- First person names A item
- Next person names B item
- Continue through alphabet
- Hesitate 5 seconds = drink
- Wrong category = drink 2
- Complete alphabet = winner picks category
- Loser starts next round
Tips & Strategies
Avoid overthinking; simpler words like 'apple' or 'banana' are safer bets than 'acerola' or 'bitter melon.' Pay attention to the flow of letters, being mentally ready for tricky letters like Q, X, and Z can save you from drinking. If you're stuck, stalling by acting like you're thinking deeply might buy you a couple of seconds, but don't push past the 5-second limit. Picking a broad category like 'animals' makes it easier for everyone to contribute, but narrowing the category to 'animals that live underwater' can trip up overconfident players quickly.
Variations
Reverse Alphabet Mode: Start at Z and work backward to A instead of the usual order, throwing off players' instincts.. Double Drink Penalty: Instead of the usual 1-drink penalty for hesitating, players drink 2 for failing to name something in time.. Wildcard Categories: The winner of each round can choose an absurdly specific new category, like 'brands of chips' or 'types of fabric',to make the next round harder.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What happens if two people say an item at the same time?
- Both players drink 1, and the group decides who continues the sequence to keep things moving smoothly.
- What do we do if someone picks an impossible category?
- If the category is too narrow or niche (e.g., 'chemical compounds starting with J'), the group can veto it and pick a new one.
- Can we skip letters like Q or X?
- No skipping,if you can't name something for a tricky letter, you drink, and the next person starts the sequence from where you left off.
- What counts as hesitation during the game?
- Failing to name an item within 5 seconds or repeating an earlier item in the sequence both count as hesitation, and you drink as a result.
